Swarm Sunday – 8/7/11 – 8/13/11

It’s been another busy week, with lots of dragonfly swarms reported throughout the US and Canada.  There was a really major migratory swarm in Rhode Island too, with hundreds of thousands of dragonflies flying inland from the beach.  It was so spectacular that I got 6 different reports about the same swarm!  It isn’t everyday that I get that many reports from migratory swarms, even the really big ones, so it was exciting.  Probably more exciting for the people who actually saw it though!

Lots of people this week also reported seeing various species of birds within the dragonfly swarms, though nearly everyone stated explicitly that the birds were not catching and eating the dragonflies.  I’m guessing they’re going after the same bugs the dragonflies are eating.  Pretty cool!  I hope I get to see a dragonfly/bird swarm sometime myself.  It sounds like an amazing experience.
