Ooh, that’s a great idea! The tree is out on a busy road and I live in a complex of rentals, so it might not work, but I should ask my landlords and see if they would mind. Mostly I worry about their taking anything I put on one of their street-facing trees being ripped down because they like everything to look “tidy” and they have a real hatred of all insects, but mantids aren’t harmful to the tree and I can explain about how I’m a scientist interested in studying the mantids. Hmmm… Might work!
A well disguised ootheca!
That’s what I thought! I hope I’ll be able to see what comes out!
Couldn’t you put some mesh netting or something around it so when they hatch they can’t get too far until you can release them?

That’s easy! Put a sign on the tree!
“Endangered Animal Recovery Site. $2000 dollar fine for disturbing protective enclosure!”
Ha ha! That would totally work. :)
Carolina mantid ootheca?
I have no idea what sort of mantids will come out of it! It’s not the type I usually see, so it’s not one I’m familiar with.
