Winter is coming, so I am feeling a little dragonfly deprived. Luckily, I opened one of my last remaining unpacked boxes last weekend and discovered the nearly life-life artificial dragonflies I had bought for my wedding and never used. My office at the field station is in a trailer and it’s got those removable white tiles in the ceiling. So, I bent the little wires on the dragonflies, slipped them under the tiles, and made myself a little dragonfly swarm in my corner of the office. This is a terrible iPhone photo taken after dark in the harsh lights of the trailer, but you get the idea:
Now when I need a break, or get frustrated by something I’m working on, I can look up and see a dragonfly swarm right there! Yay!

I love the idea of your artificial dragonfly swarm to keep you company!
Thanks! Every now and again I find myself looking up at the ceiling when I’m tired of working on something, so it’s nice to have something to look at up there now. Those ceiling tiles aren’t very exciting otherwise.
Where did you purchase these dragonflies?
I don’t remember!!! They were the very best ones and I can’t remember where I got them. There’s one online company that has some decent ones (http://www.floraltrims.com/decorative-bugs-ss2.html) and I feel like this was the place I ended up buying mine. However, I looked again last night, thinking I wanted to get more for my ceiling, and I couldn’t find the ones I bought. I bought them three years ago, so it’s always possible they don’t make them anymore. You might also search for 3d dragonflies on Etsy.com. They’ve got a lot of great paper and plastic dragonflies available that look a little more realistic if your project will work with something a little flatter.
I agree with afrenchgarden. It’s perfect decor for you!

Thanks! I think they’re fun and they’ve added some great color to my otherwise very boring ceiling. (Every time your little beagle avatar pops up, it makes me smile. They’re just so darned irresistible! I miss having beagles…)
That little beagle face really does make people smile! Actually, I picked it as an gravatar because I knew it was easy to spot (memorable).
Who doesn’t love a good beagle face? My dad’s beagle is 15 1/2 now and is STILL the most horribly behaved dog on the planet (like most beagles I’ve had or encountered), but one look at a beagle’s soppy little face is enough to make you forget every bad thing they’ve ever done. They’re just so CUTE! They get away with murder…
That is a great idea! BTW, Umbra makes a set of wall-decor dragonflies too which I have been eyeing in a local shop: http://www.umbra.com/ustore/product/wallflutter-wall-decor.store
I know!! I really want those too. I’ve had them on my Christmas wishlist for the last few years and no one’s ever bought them for me. Maybe I should just buy them myself…
That is a cool idea, but if I do it in my office, others might think they’re for real and call the exterminator. Great prank though! LOL!
Ha ha! Sounds like your coworkers are a bit different than mine! We work at a field station/nature center, so my office mate thought my dragonflies were great.
I work at an ad advertising agency and yes, some might think they’re real, LOL!
Ha ha! I can imagine that realistic fake insects and ad people don’t always go well together. One of my best friends is a graphic designer and used to make us switch tables if so much as an ant touched it. :)
