Really the title says it all! I took a photo of a fly on a flowering shrub over the summer and the abdomen was REALLY shiny:
So shiny, in fact, that I could see my reflection in the fly’s butt! Check it out:
Of all the things you thought you might do today, I’d bet staring intently at a fly’s derriere wasn’t one of them. :)

If that’s you, you have some kind of weird Yoda ears, apparently.
Ha ha! I was thinking devil horns, but weird Yoda ears works too. :) In real life, my ears are actually quite small though.
That may be the best insect-related sentence or phrase since “The Bugs of Booger County”. By the way, you are indeed wiggy enough to get in to see Dr. Wilson. I believe I’d BREAK in to see him.
Glad you like it!
I have several other opportunities to at least be in the same room as Dr. Wilson, so I’m not worried. I really just want a chance to see him in person, even if I don’t have a chance to talk to him.
i think it is hard to take an insect photo.
It can be! You need a decent camera to get good shots for sure.
thank you for tip!
all the best!
All I see is a horned creature on that reflection. :-O
Yeah, there is a unfortunately placed segmental division on the abdomen that makes me look like the devil. I think that just adds to the charm. :)
hahahahaaa or a chupacabra perhaps?
Yes!!! Chupacabra for sure!
You poor thing – do they not have mirrors in North Carolina??
Ha ha! This is the south Kate! There are mirrors galore. We gals are expected to look our very best! :)
No, I sure didn’t expect to stare into a fly’s butt today. A miniature pinscher maybe, but not a fly. Ha!
Nancy
Min pin butt, huh? At least that’s a little smaller than my beheamoth of dog’s butt! :)
That certainly is a shiny butt! I love the long, backwards pointing hairs between his wings, they are like huge spikes.
I posted a flys bum photo the other day too (although that fly had shiny green eyes and a fluffy bum) :)
I agree! Those hairs are great, and the fly is pretty darned awesome in general. HUGE too! That’s like 1/2 inch long!
I had to get out my ruler (metric here) but yes, 1/2 inch is a big fly. The weather is starting to heat up down here in the southern hemisphere so I have noticed a huge variety of large flies at the moment (which is nice for regular posting purposes). Thankfully they mainly hang around in the garden and are not all human-annoying ones!
I completely forgot that you’re on metric! Somehow I think all the British colonies should be using the English system, but your country is clearly more on top of this sort of thing than mine… Glad you’re enjoying your flies! That’s definitely one of the great things about summer, at least I think so.
We have completely horrid flies as well as these nice looking ones.
The Blowflies, black flies and March Flies are just torturous when the weather heats up. You leave a door open for the breeze and the house fills up. Blowies, who then spend the evening flying slowly around the house droning loudly and driving everyone mad. Mozzies bite you all the time, black flies get in your eyes and March flies want to jab you as well….
Those nice looking flies we have need to do a better job of marketing their brothers, if the bad ones looked so good we might not hate them so much!
Either that, or you need to hire some dragonflies to take care of your horrid fly problem. They’d love to help out! :)
We get heaps of dragonflies (fairly close to the river here) but it would take a plague of them to make even a slight dent in the fly numbers :(
Well, just think of how many flies you’d have WITHOUT the dragonflies!
I shudder to think! :D
What a great tachinid! Perhaps not the most flattering mirror, though, with the horns…
Everyone comments on the horns… :) But what can you expect from a fly butt mirror, really?
