Well-Nigh Wordless Wednesday: Enormous

You know an insect is BIG when you can get it to fill most of the frame of an iPhone shot without any sort of macro lens attachments.  Check this crane fly out!

That’s enormous for a crane fly.  I think they’re fun, but I know a lot of people are terrified of them.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: these flies can’t hurt you!  Most of them can’t even eat as adults, so they got nuthin’ to bite you with.  Nuthin’!  You’re totally safe around these guys, no matter how big and leggy they are.

  1. And they move so slow you have to be careful to not accidentally hurt them or kill them either. I do so wish they didn’t look like mosquitoes though.

  2. I remember something that we used to lovingly call a “squiter eater”. And I think that it was like this. (Essentially, it seemed like a really big mosquito but we knew it wouldn’t bite us.) I wonder if this is what is was (& that we were wrong about the idea that it ate mosquitoes) or whether there’s something else out there?

    • Many people call these mosquito eaters, so this was likely what you saw. They do not, however, eat mosquitoes! A lot of people swear up and down that they do, but honestly: most crane flies can’t eat at all, and those that do are nectar suckers. They’re not agile enough to catch and eat mosquitoes either, even if they could!

  3. I told my sister they were giant poisonous mosquitoes when we were both very young. She believed me for years. I don’t think she’s forgiven me yet, but she’ll kill me for the vacuum cleaner incident before she kills me for this. : – )

    • Younger sister? I don’t think my sister was young enough compared to me to ever really believe anything I said, but I would have done similar things to her if I could have gotten away with it! It was my right, as eldest, to torture my younger sibling with misinformation. Just wish it actually worked on occasion…

That said, wow. That’s a little wrong. Really funny, but also kinda wrong. :)

    • There are giant mozzies that are just starting to move north into the US (they’ve been big news in Florida this year!), but these are not mozzies. Far less annoying that mozzies as a result, at least as far as I’m concerned!

Have something to say?
