If you’re a small, aquatic insect, fish, or tadpole, this image should make you fear for your life:
Dragonfly nymphs are pretty ferocious, so I imagine that something like this is the last thing many small aquatics ever see, right before that mouthpart snaps out, grabs them, and eats them…

Ha ha! Now, I will admit that I HAVE been bitten by one of these little buggers, but apart from a sharp pinch or two they’re unlikely to cause lasting damage. :)
Amazing! I took an aquatic invert ecology class once…I remember looking at these guys under the microscope, and keying them out according to their nasty-looking mouthparts.
Yep! Pretty fun to get a good, close look at them, huh?

Not that hard actually! Just muck about in a pond along the edges and you’re likely to find one.
