For the Pop & Color theme for Photography 101, I chose this photo:
Not an insect, but I think the little yellow and red shoulder feathers of red-winged blackbirds really pop, especially when they are photographed against the sky.
Keeping this short today!

Love the pic of the red wing blackbird. The blackbird family is one of my favorites. They are such interesting birds. We see them every once in a while here in Arizona. Thank you for the picture. Love your posts!
I used to see them in AZ a lot! They like aquatic habitats, which meant that I saw them when I went to collect the aquatic insects I needed for my research. Always loved seeing them then, and I see even more of them now!
I too love red winged blackbirds. My grandson and I love to hunt for their nests in the bull rushes…
Fun! What a great way to spend time with your grandson.
Here in Wisconsin, “Land of Many Lakes” = we see them everywhere in the Spring = “Red-Winged Blackbirds” = but in the Summer and in the Fall migration they are all black.. = no red-yellow feathers.. Do they loose these attractive mating feathers after mating & nesting times are over..?? – Eddie..
I honestly don’t know! Birds are not my forte, though I do know that these birds change fairly significantly from juveniles to adults. It wouldn’t surprise me if they lost the bright colors in fall, though the ones I see at the feeders in winter here still have the red and yellow too…
Wow beautiful!!
Thank you!
Wow! What a brilliant shot.
Thank you!
Beautiful popping colour and a wonderful song. We saw our first one back for spring this week.
Excellent! We get them year-round here, but they don’t start calling much until spring. It’s a welcome sound!
