Cool Weather Moths (Well-Nigh Wordless Wednesday)

It’s gotten really chilly in Raleigh over the past few weeks.  We’ve had some decent days mixed in too, so it doesn’t quite feel like winter yet, but the insects are obviously on their way out for the season and have become rather sparse.  It was therefore with great pleasure that I came home on a chilly night last weekend and found a half-dozen of these little beauties on the molding around my front door:

Unknown moth

I have no idea what they were, but I was impressed that these moths were still out on a genuinely cold night.  Always interesting to see insects active when the temps are just above freezing!

Anyone else seeing cool things out still?  I want to live vicariously through you if you are!

Well-Nigh Wordless Wednesday: I Don’t Do Cold

Though it has been beautiful out in Raleigh recently, it got quite cold several times this winter.  Coming as I did from several years of living in Arizona, I’m not used to cold, particularly cold with any sort of moisture in it.  This is what happens when you put a desert girl in cold, humid weather:

DW is cold

DW is cold

Brrr…  And if I think it’s cold, so do the insects.  I’m ready for them to come back.  Come on spring!

Well-Nigh Wordless Wednesday: A Dearth of Insects

Apart from the occasional wayward ladybug that makes it into the trailer where my office is at work, there has been a shocking lack of insects out and about for me to look at/document recently.  It might have something to do with this:

Snowy

Snowy

It snowed for several hours on Saturday and Sunday followed with a frigid wind that ripped across the prairie and cut right through your clothes.  Methinks it may be a little too cold out for insects!  Soon though.  Spring is coming soon, and I expect it to be AMAZING, an explosion of life and green and beauty.  I can’t wait!

Well-Nigh Wordless Wednesday: Brrr…

My advisor and I take our Aquatic Entomology students on two 3-day camping trips, one in southern Arizona and one in northern Arizona.  The latter often involves snow or freezing rains, miserably cold nights, and roaring campfires.  Sometimes it’s warm during the day, but other times it’s more like this:

Cold students

Brrr...

Granted, a lot of Arizonans break out the parkas when it gets below 55 degrees, but it was genuinely cold on this particular trip!
